World Environment Day : Tree Plantation at Shirgaon Village

Date:1st July 2016

Participants: Third Year Students of SJCET and Second Year Students of SJCHS (NSS Units).

The NSS Units of St. John College of Engineering and Technology (SJCET) and St. John College of Humanities and Sciences (SJCHS), had participated in a Tree Plantation Drive which was organized by the Forest Department of Palghar District. The Orientation session and Practical Demonstration was held on 1st July 2016 at Shirgaon Beach, Palghar(W).

Forty (40) students and two teachers attended this drive. The objective of this tree plantation was to create awareness about “Save Nature – Save Future”. Tree plantation aims to save environment, afforestation and make the surrounding clean and green through a major Tree Plantation Activity.

An Orientation speech was given by Mr. Nandkishor Kupte (Chief Assistant Conservator Officer, Forest Department of Palghar). Mr. Kupte and Students groups of various colleges shared their views about the importance of tree plantation for a greener India.

Volunteers from different colleges of Palghar District and Mumbai had participated in this event. The volunteers were mostly from the NSS units, NCC units, Zoology and Botanical Departments.

Volunteers planted Casuarina Trees (Suruchi trees) on the coast of Shirgaon Beach. Volunteers planted a total number of 1260 saplings at Shirgaon Beach. The Forest Department workers taught us the techniques of how to plant and water the young saplings. Mr. Kishor Shinde (PSI, Satpati Branch) also supported and encouraged us by sharing his views on planting trees to save environment.

St. John Technical and Educational Campus believes that organizing such drive is very important in our area to create awareness and this in turn will lead the students to care for their environment.

Mr. Crystal Nadar (Volunteer-Engineering NSS Unit) proposed a vote of thanks and thanked Mr. Nandkishor Kupte, and his team at forest department in making the tree plantation drive a grand success.
